Ambassador Chase Sutton's Story

How Climbing Changed My Life...
"Since an early age I've always dealt with mental health issues. I never really fit in a "group" In school and had my own group of weird friends that were all vastly different. Listening to EDM and wearing all black and skinny jeans definitely threw me in the not-so-cool club. Through high school, I really struggled with my weight back and forth. From being underweight to being overweight, I would often get comments like "you need to eat more" or "you need to eat less." That really took a toll on my confidence and how I looked at myself in the mirror. After high school, I ended up taking a semester of college and found that it just wasn't for me. I dropped out and got my own apartment.

I got really into producing music for some of the friends I made and got involved in a very drug-driven and toxic scene. I started to smoke a lot and began dabbling in different things. This went from "I'll have a little bit" to "I need more, and I need it now" really fast. I don't remember a time during those two years when I wasn't on something. My depression and anxiety worsened to the point of me attempting to take my own life. This gave me somewhat of a wake-up call. That week I ended up having to see a gastroenterologist due to the amount and number of substances I was taking. I was damaging my digestive system to the point I could not stop throwing up.

Right after that, my grandmother who had COPD had gotten worse and I need to move in and help her. I knew then and there I had to make a change and realized that at the pace I was at, I wouldn't be able to be there for the people that love me the most--my family.

After moving in and helping her out, I began to work on cutting out my addictions. There was one morning she was not doing well and had a stroke. I acted fast and gave her CPR until the paramedics arrived. Her passing really caused me a lot of trauma that I am still dealing with today.
Five days after her funeral I decided to make the biggest change I ever could:  To be done with the drugs and to be done with the toxic people and things holding me back in my life. I walked into Highpoint Climbing gym and the rest is history!

I put all my focus into climbing and my health. I found an amazing girl who is now my fiancée and the best belay partner I could ever ask for. As well as an uplifting community of healthy like-minded people who all come from different walks of life. Climbing gave me a new life. And it gives me hope for others dealing with similar things. If climbing could do that for me, I believe it could help many others too."
