On The Wall Confidence with Paige Claassen (Takeover Highlights)

Takeover Highlights with new mom and pro climber, Paige Claassen

During her takeover, Paige talked about balancing being a new mom and training and discussed techniques for maintaining confidence while projecting.  Her typical training schedule at home involves 4-5 sessions a week, specifically focusing on her weaknesses or "project-specific" training.

1. What's your favorite breakfast for climbing days? 

"I like to start every day, resting or climbing, with pancakes or waffles (I add in eggs or PhysiVantage whey protein for an extra boost). I usually aim for a high-fat & high-protein diet to promote recovery."

2. How do you choose to organize your rest and fueling for a redpoint burn? 

"I take between 1-2 hours between redpoint burns on my projects. This depends on how much energy was exerted and the type of climbing/power required to execute. During my rest time, I eat snacks, drink PhysiVantage Endure X, belay my partner, and throw sticks around for my puppy.

Most importantly my goal is to keep the mood light and fun. I perform best when I don't take myself too seriously."

3. What are your top confidence and recovery tips? 

"I rehearse the beta in my head on rest days to keep things fresh and during this visualization I envision moving through crux sections and/or making new links I haven't accomplished yet! Other than that, I strive to keep my mind off the route to give myself a mental break and not fall into doubt and to mitigate the pressure of sending. Also, along the lines of confidence I like to give myself pep-talks and focus on what's going well."

 4. How can we go about speeding up recovery as we age? 

Drink More Water

Consume plenty of Protein

5. Do you feel like your body works differently post pregnancy? 

"In some ways yes. Certain movements like, pulling with only one-foot on the wall felt way more difficult in the beginning. I have tried to pay attention to how I feel. If something feels off, I evaluate whether it is strength related or whether I need to back off and give my body more time to heal for this type of move."

One thing Paige felt was super important to focus on post-pregnancy was building back up her foundational strength. One of her new favorite exercises for shoulder and core strength is featured below.
