Ninja Warrior Lady Crushers! Isabella Wakeham and Katie Bone

Hi! I’m Isabella Wakeham! 

I am 18-years-old and have been a Ninja Warrior competitor for 8 years now. I first saw it on TV and begged my parents to let me try it out. They took me to the closest “ninja gym” and it ended up being one of the top gyms in the country! I was coached by athletes who have competed on the show and fell in love with the sport.

I love competing in Ninja Warrior because it’s like a giant playground! The obstacles we face are definitely intimidating but seeing all your hard work payoff is a feeling every athlete knows well. 

When I’m training for big competitions, whether it’s the show or other leagues, I focus on technique, strength, and mental training.

Isabella Tells Us About Some of Her Most Notable Accomplishments:

  • I was a part of the first wave of teens invited to compete on American Ninja Warrior last year!
  • I am 2x Pro World Champion with the National Ninja League (now called World Ninja League).
  • I competed on the newest season of American Ninja Warrior (still running) and was one of an amazing 7 ladies to make it to semi-finals. Watch to see how I do!
  • I compete alongside my 21-year-old brother who has been a driving force in my life as a ninja. We competed together last year as well, and we both made it all the way to the national finals where he hit a buzzer!

Isabella shares a pro tip for those looking to try the sport:

"If you are a new ninja, my best advice is to find a group you enjoy training with. When you’re enjoying your time it’s so much easier to put in the hours and develop a love for what you do. Once you love it, the motivation to add in the important strength and skill training comes pretty easily, in my experience!"

5 Training Tips from Ninja Warrior Competitor Isabella Wakeham:

  1. Get a good coach. 
  2. Work on weaknesses 
  3. Find people to push you. 
  4. Help others (not as a nice mushy thing, but when you have to analyze movements for someone else it helps you to understand it for yourself!)
  5. Understand that every day is not going to be your best day and be smart with your training, but fully commit to becoming better each and every day.

Hi everyone, I am Katie Bone!

I am a 16-year-old competitive rock climber and ninja warrior from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I was put in various sports at a young age. It was not until I was 8 that I walked into a climbing gym for my brother's birthday party that I truly fell in love with the sport and never looked back.  

And then, 4 years ago a close friend of mine convinced me to sign up for a local ninja warrior competition and see how I do.  Low and behold, I fell in love with "ninja" too! Although in 2017 I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes, I continue to compete all over the nation in climbing and you can see my runs on the newest season (14) of American Ninja Warrior.

Katie shares what climbing and Ninja Warrior, both mean to her:

Doing ANW this year was so much bigger than me and me walking onto the stage was a big win. It gave me a huge platform to share my story and inspire people living with or without Type 1 Diabetes.

Since my qualifying episode aired, I have had thousands of people reach out to me telling me what my story did for them, and I was able to impact people in more ways than I can possibly imagine. Aside from everything that my story was able to do, competing this season has been such a dream come true! I was given the opportunity to compete on a stage that I have dreamed of for so long, and all of the hard work that I put in has finally paid off. 

I do both climbing and ninja because it's fun, I love it, and everything about it simply feels right. In both of these sports, I get to absolutely push my limits, physically and mentally. I couldn't possibly imagine my life without either one of these sports or the community that has come with them. 

Katie explains her training before ANW filming:

Before season, my main focus shifted from climbing and more towards ninja. I was doing strength and conditioning two times a week and was going to the ninja gym a couple days a week when I would normally be climbing. Along with all of that, I made multiple trips out to Colorado to train with some ninja crushers out there. Although I was prioritizing my training and filming for American Ninja Warrior, I continued to compete in rock climbing competitions as well as, non-show related ninja competitions.

A tidbit of advice from an up-and-coming ninja star:

If there is something you are passionate about, do it!

Ninja Warrior and climbing have helped shape me into the person I am today. I urge you to find what you truly love and pursue it with all you have, because you never know where it may lead you. Do not let fear of failure stop you from trying something new, but instead look at fear as a natural part of growing and learning.  

Remember, failure is always a better teacher than winning.
