Are NSAIDs Hurting Your Training & Performance?

I admit it!

I was a heavy NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) user for many years...

Like countless hard-training athletes, I consumed NSAIDs (my drugs of choice were generic Ibuprofen and naproxen) thinking they would help me recover from training and climbing...and by suppressing pain, perhaps even help me train harder and perform better.

In hindsight, this was a stupid and unhealthy habit!

NSAIDs have no performance-enhancing effects, although they do tamp down pain and inflammation.

Unwanted and Counter-Productive Effects of NSAID Use

The health risks of chronic NSAID use are now well documented: asthma exacerbation; gastrointestinal and renal side-effects including acute kidney injury; and the potential to aggravate hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases.

More immediate and concerning for athletes is research showing that chronic NSAID use inhibits collagen repair—a terrible side-effect for a hard-training climber!

Furthermore, it's now widely recognized that a modest level of post-workout inflammation is a desired signal for the adaptations we seek from training. Therefore, heavy NSAID use to suppress the normal inflammatory response has the unintended consequence of also diminishing the adaptations of training.
